Often, when people sign up for auto insurance, they specify that they want full coverage, thinking that it means everything is covered regardless of what happens. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

Full coverage means that your insurance policy meets the minimum liability requirement as set forth by your state and the auto insurance policy, which includes comp and collision. Wondering what the difference is between liability, comprehensive and collision? Read more…

There are extra car insurance coverages available that you may want to consider:

Uninsured and/or Under Insured Motorist

The uninsured motorist (UM) refers to a driver. Other than yourself, who causes a car accident, but does not have insurance. The under insured motorist (UIM) refers to another driver that causes an accident, who does have liability insurance, but whose limit is not enough to cover your medical costs or property damage expenses.

Many insurance agents often leave these off of their rates so that the premiums look lower. But most people want this coverage included. Make sure if you do opt out of it, you do so knowingly.

Roadside Assistance

If you’ve ever bought a new car, it’s possible that your purchase came with roadside assistance. But when that coverage expires, you’ll want to consider getting the option through your auto insurance policy. Roadside Assistance is exactly what it sounds like. It is assistance that is available to you if you have trouble on the road. The most commonly used portion is the towing option. Many policies often include other features, such as fixing flat tires, battery service, fuel and fluids and lockouts.

Personal Umbrella Policy

Sometimes, some extra protection is needed and a personal umbrella policy will help you get the extra protection you need. Most umbrella insurance policies go up to $1,000,000. If you have a homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance policy, you can bundle it with an auto and umbrella policy to get maximum coverage to protect you from when things go really wrong.
